The Holy Quran is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God (Arabic: الله‎, Allah). It is widely regarded as the finest piece of literature in the Arabic language. The Quran consists of a collection of the Prophet Muhammad's teachings, arranged in the form of a series of conversations. Each surah (Arabic: سورة‎, surah, "verse") is a single verse. The Quran is divided into chapters called suras, which are then divided into verses. Each verse is a word of God, and the entire Quran is a Word of God.

The word "Quran" is derived from the Arabic word برنامج‎, meaning "the Book." The Quran is believed to have been written by the angel Gabriel, in a style that resembles Egyptian hieroglyphics, using a specific style and writing system. The Quran is composed of 12 chapters, or "books", which are then divided into 393 "surahs" (Arabic: سورة‎, surah, "verse"). The first two "books" are called "Prayer and Donation" and "Rabbi and Sharkh", and the last two "books" are called "The Golden Mountains" and "The Iron Wind". The last "book" is called "The Fard" (Arabic: الفرد‎, "The Unity").

The Quran is a fundamental basis of Islamic law and theology, and is also widely regarded as a primary source of religious knowledge and religious law in Islam.
